ESL Promotion - June 12, 2018
On June 12th, HBAS hosted its first ever Promotion Ceremonies for Level 4 students who are promoting out of our ESL Program.
The morning and evening ceremonies gave an opportunity for students to reflect on how far they've come, and for the ESL department to celebrate how far they'll go in the future. Also joining in the festivities were several of our college and community partners, HBUHSD Board Member Kathleen Iverson, and students' family and friends.
During both ceremonies, ESL students played key roles. In the morning, Gerardo Lopez led the pledge of allegiance, and Elizabeth Renteria sang the national anthem.
Student speaker Abraham Hernandez eloquently described how "he became a child again with a hunger and desire to learn." He encouraged his fellow students to "continue cultivating that seed," the desire to learn, "because the harvest will be good." He plans on returning to our BESST Center campus to get his High School Diploma, and ultimately enter a university.
In the evening, Anh Troung led the pledge of allegiance, and Elizabeth returned to sing the national anthem. Student speaker Nancy Flores thanked her teacher, classmates and support staff at the Twilight Program. She knows that "this accomplishment is only the beginning." From here, she will work towards getting her GED, and then pursue a career as a medical assistant.
What's next for our promoted students? Many will move on to further education and career training. Others will continue to use English confidently, whether at work, their children's school, or around town. In whatever students choose to pursue, they will carry the knowledge that with hard work and determination, they can achieve their goals.
A special thanks to ESL Counselor Ashley Nguyen for spearheading this event, and to the ESL staff, teachers and administration for making it happen. We look forward to celebrating our promoted students in the years to come.
