Ready for WASC
From March 11-14, HBAS is hosting a committee of seven educators for our WASC visit. You’re probably wondering: what in the world is WASC?
Who & What? The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) is an Accrediting Commission serving over 4,600 schools. “WASC accreditation is a process schools use to monitor student learning and set school improvement goals. About every six years, “accredited schools conduct a self-study and host a self-study visit. The self-study process culminates in the refinement of a schoolwide action plan.”
Why? It’s absolutely vital that our students can trust the quality of their education at HBAS. A part of building that trust is being accredited. WASC accreditation “assures a school community that the school’s purposes are appropriate and being accomplished through a viable education program.” In simpler terms, it shows that we set goals for learning, and help students achieve those goals.
How? Our upcoming WASC Visit is the pinnacle of an intensive process that began back in January, 2017. The HBAS Self-Study Report reflects an examination of our school’s operations, student learning outcomes, strengths and areas for improvement. Students, staff, and community members met and offered input to ensure their needs and ideas were incorporated. This process informed the development of our Action plan that will improve our school.
WASC Committee members have been reviewing our Self-Study Report in preparation for the upcoming visit. While on our campuses, they will observe classes and meet with staff and students. The committee will then share findings and recommendations based on their review of our report, and their observations and interactions at our school.
When? The WASC Committee will be at HBAS campuses from Sunday, March 11 – Wednesday, March 14. Here are the key events for each day of the visit:
- March 11, 4-5:00pm : HBAS hosts reception to welcome the WASC Visiting Committee
- March 12 & 13: Committee visits classrooms, meets with students and staff
- March 14, 11:30am: Committee shares their findings and recommendations at the Westminster Mall Location
The WASC process has been long and demanding, but it’s an invaluable tool in the refinement of our goals and priorities for the next several years. We look forward to welcoming the WASC Visiting Committee to HBAS, and showcasing the high-quality learning that goes on in our classrooms. Stay tuned for an update after our WASC visit is completed.
