Committed to Learning

ESL Instructor Evelyn Jackson chose Pablo Monroy as her 2022 Student of the Year because he "exemplifies true commitment to learning a new language."

From Hidalgo, Mexico, Pablo has been living in the U.S. for about seven years. When meeting two of his sons, instructor Evelin Jackson was impressed by their demeanor. She explained, “Pablo's character is clearly evidenced by his children: He is an honorable and humble person who wants the best life for his family.”

Pablo initially lacked the confidence to go back to school. With the support of his family, he overcame that obstacle and enrolled in the ESL Program at Huntington Beach Adult School. He knows that improving his English skills will give him an advantage in life.

Pablo admitted that when growing up, he was never the best student and didn't study enough. Now, Pablo comes to class every evening ready to learn. Instructor Evelin Jackson can often “see the struggle in his eyes, but he still smiles. He never misses the opportunity to laugh.”

Pablo is a full-time construction worker. Despite long day shifts, he still makes it to class on time every evening. He then begins his homework at 10:00 p.m. and doesn't stop until finished. What sets Pablo apart from other students is his persistence. He knows learning English grammar is difficult, but has not given up!
