ESL, GED & CTE...Oh My!

"Olga is a clear example of persistence, determination, and resilience!"  - ESL Instructor Rebecca Sphor.

Olga, 2023 Student of the Year, is in THREE different programs at HBAS. She started out in ESL, added the GED Program, and is now also pursuing the Early Childhood Education (ECE) Program—a partnership with Orange Coast College.  As a GED student at HBAS, Olga is able to take ECE class for free at OCC through our Dual Enrollment Program.

Learn more about Olga's HBAS journey from Rebecca Spohr, the teacher who nominated her for Student of the Year:

"Understanding college lectures, textbook vocabulary and technology can be a daunting task for anyone, especially an Intermediate English Language Learner.  It is no surprise to those who know Olga, that she has taken on the challenge and is enjoying it.

In addition to her studies, Olga has become involved in our HBAS community. She participated in our WASC Student Support Services Focus Group and danced with the folklórico group at our Cultural Diversity Day.

Olga has faced many challenges on her academic journey. Besides her rigorous academic schedule, she has a full family life. She has a husband, two adult children, and is a foster parent to her nephew and young niece. We thank Olga for her student contributions and wish her the best with her goal of opening a childcare center in her home one day."
